From The 33rd Round to the MLB, Brock Stassi Shows Us What Commitment Really Is

Posted on Posted in Leadership

If you know me, you know I’m not exactly a baseball fan. But this story is so special and inspiring I had to share it. It’s a story of overcoming hardship and never quitting on a dream. It’s not every day that a baseball player like Brock Stassi gets attention, but his story of commitment, perseverance, and achievement is something when can all learn from.

The MLB Dream

The route to the Major Leagues wasn’t easy for Brock Stassi. As a 33rd round draft pick in 2011, Brock’s journey would start on a farm team in the minors. Now in 2017, after 6-years of playing in the minors, he is on the Phillies 25-man roster.

This is what he had to say after he was asked what it felt like to be where he is now, “I always believed in myself. I always had confidence that I would work hard,” said Stassi, who was drafted by the Phillies in the 33rd round in 2011. “When I was in high school, I wasn’t recruited to go to college, and then late pick, so a lot of confidence. It was always my end goal. I never doubted myself ever.” (Credit to USA Today for the quote.)

This short interview with Brock Stassi reveals some amazing lessons on commitment and achieving goals we all can learn from.

Find Someone That Believes In You

In the video, you hear Brock talk about the scout that drafted him in the 33rd round. This scout named Joey recognized talent and took a risk. The risk paid off in the minor leagues and hopefully, now in the major league. It’s unbelievable what happens when you can find someone that believes in you and supports you. Without Joey, Brock would never be where he is.

Do you know a Joey in your life? Could you be a Joey to someone?

Seize Even the Smallest of Opportunities

Even as a 33rd round pick in the draft, saw his window of opportunity and he took it. Even the smallest of opportunities can be a start to something great.

Show Genuine Gratitude

Brock tells the interviewer that Joey, “saw something in me” then holding back tears he says, “just so thankful, thankful.” All of our success comes on the shoulders’ of others.

In his humble acknowledgment of the importance of that one act, Brock reveals to us the significance of being genuinely grateful for all those that helped him get to where he is now.

Believe In Yourself

The interviewer asks Brock if making the Major Leagues was realistic and if he ever doubted. Without missing a beat Brock says, “no, I always believed in myself…never doubted myself, ever.” Wow.

When you believe in yourself, your dream will never die. More often than not it may even come true!

Don’t Give Up On Your Dreams

There’s one more lesson we can learn from Brock Stassi. The lesson of perseverance. Once he entered the Minor Leagues he worked for 6 years to finally make an MLB roster. He may have always deep down believed, but I’m sure there were days of doubt. This sort of perseverance is about the little, incremental improvements that help you obtain your goal.

Brock Stassi’s Example Teaches Us To:

  • Find people who believe in you.
  • Use every opportunity you get.
  • Be grateful.
  • Believe in yourself.
  • Persevere.

Do you have a dream that you want to achieve? What is your 33rd round opportunity? Who is your Joey?
